Shipwreck

Poetry | Mimi Lam

Calm through the storm

I climb steep ledges

almost slipping on loose dirt,

fearing limbs caught between edges.

Bliss was seeing the coast

walking felt natural

like I was part rock

meant to be alone

traversing the uneven terrain.

Shipwreck may not be a destination,

but a moment to pause.

After all the stumbles,

I stopped as the horizon cast its purple hue.

Sun said its farewell.

A blue shadow overlooks the shore.

“Keep going,” the ship says,

“The horizon doesn’t stop here,

but look how far you’ve come.

You didn’t leap off a cliff.

Nothing but the shore to keep you company.

Now that’s a sign of bravery.”
